Egyptian court sentences Muslim Brotherhood chief among 683 to death

CAIRO: An Egyptian court has awarded death sentence to Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie and 683 other activists over charges relating to an attack on a police station last year, Egyptian media reported on Monday.

The same court reversed 492 of the 529 death sentences it passed in March, replacing the capital punishment for most convicts to life in prison, media reports further said.

Earlier on Sunday, the National Alliance to Support Legitimacy led by the Muslim Brotherhood movement said that it will boycott the upcoming presidential election scheduled to be held on May 26.

In a statement the alliance said that it would not recognize the election monitoring planned by Western supporters of the coup.
