PESHAWAR: An election tribunal on Tuesday ordered a re-election in the NA-46 Khyber Agency constituency, declaring null and void the election of an independent candidate Nasir Khan Afridi from the constituency.
Afridi had won the seat with 4,028 votes during the general elections held in May last year against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Muhammad Iqbal Afridi who bagged 3,547 votes.
However, the winning candidate was accused of rigging during the elections and the results were challenged. Subsequently, the election tribunal declared the results invalid and ordered re-election in the constituency.
The deputy registrar of the tribunal Riaz Ahmed Khattak told media that the tribunal had requested the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to make arrangements for a re-election in the constituency.
