ISLAMABAD: The federal government has summoned an emergency meeting of the national security committee to discuss the country’s deteriorating security situation as well as the future of peace talks with the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the media citing sources reported on Monday.

The meeting will meet this week under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. However, a date for the meeting has not yet been disclosed.

The report about convening an emergency meeting of the national security committee came hours after 10 militants belonging to the terror outfit launched an assault on Jinnah International Airport in Karachi with grenades and automatic weapons.

However, Pakistan army, police and Rangers conducted a joint operation against the attackers and killed seven of them in an exchange of fire while three militants blew themselves up. As many as 13 security personnel including eight members of the airport security force also embraced martyrdom in the operation.
