NewsIndian national flag was designed by a Muslim woman

In Contrary to popular belief, the Indian national flag was designed by a Muslim woman from Hyderabad named Suraiya Badruddin Tayyabji, not Pingali Venkayya.

Suraiya Tayyabji was the Indian Civil Service (ICS) Officer in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in 1947. She designed the flag which was approved on July 17, 1947.

Suraiya Badruddin Tayyabji’s husband Badruddin Tayyabji was the first Indian Solicitor & the first Chief Justice of Mumbai/Mombay in 1902. Suraiya was niece of Sir Akbar Hydari of Hyderabad.Indian national flag was designed by a Muslim woman

Pingali Venkayya Ji, who as per popular beliefs designed the current Indian national flag, had designed the flag of the Home Rule League & the first Congress flag which had the “Charkha” in it, not the present Indian flag with the ‘Wheel’.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a hardline Hindu organisation, had burnt the Indian Tricolor because it was designed by a Muslim, and it opposed the green band. It had wanted a triangle “orange pennant” to be there in the national flag. Later the RSS was banned by the government of India.

The fact was also confirmed by the Indian historian and President of Voice of Telangana Captain L. Pandu Ranga Reddy as according to the News Indian Express, he said in a 2013 Press Conference that “Our (Indian) national flag was designed by a Hyderabadi Muslim woman by the name of Suraiya Tayyabji and not by Pingali Venkaiah as is widely believed”.
