Iran, Russia sign military cooperation deal

TEHRAN, Iran: The Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia have signed an agreement to intensify their military and technological cooperation.

The agreement was signed by the Iranian defense minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan and his Russian counterpart General Sergei Shoigu in Tehran on Tuesday following negotiations between the two sides.

Under the agreement, both the two countries will hold joint exercises and military training.

The two sides also emphasized the importance of maintaining regional and international peace, security and stability as well as countering all types of terrorism, separatism and extremism.

Talking to state television, the Iranian defense minister said that Iran and Russia had a “shared analysis of US global strategy, its interference in regional and international affairs and the need to cooperate in the struggle against the interference of foreign forces in the region.”

The two countries have also resolved problems concerning the delivery of Russia’s S300 missile defense systems to Iran, according to the Iranian news agency FARS.

In 2010, Russian cancelled the $800 million contract to deliver S300 air defense missile systems to Iran, citing UN sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear program.

“The two countries have decided to settle the S300 issue,” the Iranian defense ministry said.
