KABUL: Four heavily armed militants attacked the Indian consulate in the main western Afghan city of Herat on Friday morning.
The Herat police chief General Samihullah Qatra said that four attackers including suicide bombers entered houses close to the consulate before dawn and began shooting into the compound.
Subsequently, an encounter occurred between the security forces and militants that left two suicide bombers killed and another wounded.
In a statement, an Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesman in New Delhi said that all staff members in the consulate are safe.
