Nawaz Sharif's resignation demand lawful only if rigging proved: Sirajul Haq

LAHORE, Pakistan: The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader Sirajul Haq has said that the demand for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s resignation would be lawful only if some constitutional institution gives verdict that the May 2013 elections were massively rigged.

His statement came in reference to demands by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) which have been holding sit-ins in Islamabad’s red zone area for two weeks and have remained adamant over Nawaz Sharif’s resignation.

Talking to media in Mansoora after a meeting of the JI provincial chiefs and central office bearers, Sirajul Haq said that his party wanted the sit-in participants to return home peacefully.

Sirajul Haq said that it was consensus of political parties that no unconstitutional solution would be accepted and only the constitutional way out should be adopted if the sit-in continued for a hundred days.

The JI leader further said that his party was continuing its role of mediator with the support of other parties and he was hopeful that a political solution would be found out soon.
