WASHINGTON: President Barrack Obama administration is “dedicated to increasing terrorism” all around the world, renowned American academic, Noam Chomsky, has said.
“The Obama administration is dedicated to increasing terrorism. In fact, it’s doing it all over the world. Obama, first of all, is running the biggest terrorist operation that exists, maybe in history,” the MIT professor said in an interview with GRITtv host Laura Flanders.
Chomsky cited the United States’ drone assassination campaigns as just one example of how Washington is generating terrorism across the globe.
“People have a reaction, they don’t say, ‘Fine, I don’t care if my cousin was murdered.’ And they become what we call terrorists. This is completely understood from the highest level, that as you carry out these operations you’re generating terrorism,” he noted.
Chomsky said it is not surprising that “people hate the country that’s just terrorizing them.”
The MIT professor slammed the US mainstream media for being subservient to corporate and state power, a fact that he said is evident in media coverage of the latest spying scandal in America.
“If we had anything like a free press, there would be headlines saying this is a bad joke,” he said, referring to the massive surveillance of American citizens which was recently disclosed by whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Chomsky’s comments came as administration officials vigorously defended the spying programs run by the National Security Agency (NSA).
In another interview with The Guardian, the British newspaper that first broke the NSA spying programs, Chomsky said the collaboration between Washington and corporations that specialize in surveillance has created a political structure that does not represent the interests of the American people.
“Governments should not have this capacity. But governments will use whatever technology is available to them to combat their primary enemy – which is their own population,” he told The Guardian.
“They [governments and corporations] take whatever is available, and in no time it is being used against us, the population. Governments are not representative. They have their own power, serving segments of the population that are dominant and rich,” Chomsky added.
