North AmericaObama, Republicans fail to strike deal over debt ceiling

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama and House of Representatives Republicans failed to reach a consensus finding a way forward to break their deadlock over a government shutdown and extending the US debt ceiling.

A meeting was held at the White House between Obama and senior Republican lawmakers to discuss a six-week extension of the government’s borrowing limit which would help Washington avoid a possible default on its debt as the October 17 deadline for raising the nation’s debt ceiling is approaching.

In a statement after the meeting, the White House said after a discussion about potential paths forward‚ no specific determination was made. However‚ it described the meeting as good.

It said the President Obama was looking forward to making continued progress with members on both sides of the aisle.
