FAISALABAD, Pakistan: US Consul General Lahore Zachary V. Harkenrider said on Wednesday the United States and Pakistan were sharing their experience of managing their diversity through democratic systems of government.
He said this during his visit to the Lincoln Corner at Government College University Faisalabad. He gave an interactive presentation on the US Federal Government and Federal Elections to the students from various disciplines of the university.
“We have much to learn from each others experience”, he said.
He said the Lincoln Corner, which was opened to public in January 2014, was a partnership between the US Embassy, public libraries, and other institutions in Pakistan.
He said the Lincoln Corners located within universities, public libraries and other institutions, were platforms for providing information about the United States, English Language learning, Education USA, cultural programmes and alumni activities.
These corners also promote open dialogue, counteract negative preconceptions and build bridges of understandings, he said, adding that visitors of Lincoln Corners gain free access to Wi-Fi and current and reliable information about the United States through books, magazines, videos, internet, database, and programs for general public.
He said that currently, there are 16 Lincoln Corners in various cities of Pakistan including Faisalabad, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Muzaffarabad, Peshawar, Karachi, Bahawalpur, Sargodha, Khairpur, Larkana, Hyderabad, Skardu and Multan.
Each corner has been staffed by Lincoln Corner Coordinator, a bilingual Pakistani professional who is available to assist visitors with specific interests about the United States, he added.
US Consul General Harkenrider during his visit also met with the Vice Chancellor of GCUF Prof Dr. Muhammad Ali.
During meeting, the VC GCUF appreciated the efforts of US Embassy for disseminating knowledge at the grass root level.
He said that it was time to tell the people about the services of US which were being rendered in different fields like strengthening of defense, economic stability, cultural exchange and restoration of peace.
He stressed the need for peace and said that it was necessary for prosperity and development in the country.
Dr. Haq Nawaz Dean Faculty of Art and Social Sciences GCUF and Coordinator Lincolns Corners Ms. Kinza Umar Khan were also present on the occasion.
