ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif held an important meeting in Islamabad on Thursday and discussed matters relating to situation in the country.

The meeting took place after recent air strikes in North Waziristan tribal region by the Pakistan’s armed forces which killed several militants including some foreigners and key figures. The strikes appeared to be a tit-for-tat response to the militant attacks in Rawalpindi and Bannu, but the security officials said the strikes were carried out on the basis of intelligence reports.

The sources said that during the one-to-one meeting between the prime minister and the army chief, the civilian and military leadership agreed that negotiations would only be held with those who were willing to talk within the ambit of constitution while anti-state elements would be dealt with force.

The prime minister and army chief in their meeting would finalize a strategy to deal with the militants, the sources said. They further said that important decisions were also likely to be taken to improve overall national security.
