Polio worker injured in Charsadda firing

PESHAWAR, Pakistan: A polio worker was injured when unknown gunmen opened fire on a team administering anti-polio drops to children in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Charsadda district on Monday morning.

The incident took place in the Khawaja Was area of Shabqadar tehsil in Charsadda where health workers accompanied by policemen were administrating polio vaccination drops to children.

The injured person was shifted to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Charsadda for medical treatment.

On November 18, the minister of state for health Saira Afzal Tarar said in a statement that attacks on polio workers are part of an international conspiracy against Pakistan.

The state minister said that the inter-ministerial committee formed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will take up security issues which will hopefully improve the situation.

Meanwhile, a three-day anti-polio vaccination drive continues in 21 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

During the campaign which began on Sunday, children below five years age are being administered anti-polio drops.

The provincial health department has constituted 11,000 teams and 2,122 supervisors for this purpose.

The campaign is for only one day in Peshawar and Charsadda whereas for three days in other 19 districts.
