ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal has said that if Pakistan has to move forward we need to modernize the public sector.

“Without effective public sector reforms no government could be effective,” the minister said while speaking at a two-day National Consultative Workshop on ‘Civil Service Reforms’ organized by the Ministry of Planning Development & Reform (MoPDR) in Bhurban area of Murree on Monday.

Iqbal said that Pakistan is passing through a critical phase of its history as ‘we are transforming from a terrorist to an emerging state’; hence we need modern public sector to meet the challenging situation.

The two-day National Consultative Workshop on ‘Civil Service Reforms’ being held from September 14 to 15 in Burban is aimed at receiving consolidated recommendations which could help provide an enabling institutional structure for modernization of civil service and promote citizen-centric governance besides enhancing efficiency, effectiveness, transparency and accountability.

“This workshop is unique because we have political will to implement these reforms; hence real stakeholders are engaged in the reform process,” Ahsan Iqbal said.

The minister said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has taken the ownership of this reform process that is why we have wholesome presentation here, adding that administrative structure needed new inception as we are in the age of paradigm.

Iqbal said that the government institutions need to change the way of thinking and working because the traditional way of thinking and working would not be compatible with the reform agenda envisioned in Vision-2025 and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) manifesto.

Moreover, he said that reforms are like oxygen for those countries which wanted development; hence the incumbent government will make all-out efforts to reform our administrative structure according to the modern needs.

Ahsan Iqbal said that faster, smarter and agility are new traits of success that government institutions are required to adopt for better and efficient public delivery system.
