UNITED NATIONS: The Russian ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin has presented a rival resolution on the humanitarian crisis in Syria to key UN Security Council members after Russia threatened to veto a resolution proposed by the West and some Arab countries for imposing sanctions on Syria, a UN diplomat said.
Churkin gave the text of the rival resolution to the four other permanent members of the Security Council including the United States, Britain, France and China at a meeting, the UN diplomat told who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The diplomat said that representatives of the five permanent members of the Security Council are due to meet again on Thursday to try to merge the two texts. He said that it seems like the Russians are ready to talk.
