MUMBAI, India: The Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Mumbai Session Court on Wednesday in the 2002 hit-and-run case.

Later, the Mumbai High Court granted the actor interim bail for two days in response to an appeal filed by his lawyer.

The five-year imprisonment to Salman Khan was given by the Additional Sessions Judge D.W. Deshpande in Mumbai.

The 49-year-old Salman Khan was earlier in the day found guilty of drunkenly driving his SUV over homeless men sleeping on a pavement in Mumbai in 2002. In the incident, one person was killed while four others sustained injuries.

“You were driving the car, without a licence and you were under the influence of alcohol,” the judge told the actor while holding him guilty of all seven charges against him.

However, Salman Khan denied the charges against him and said he was not driving the car.

The Indian media reports said that Salman Khan was shocked to hear the verdict a about his sentence, sat down and broke down into tears. The reports said that the superstar will likely to be taken to Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail.
