ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday admitted for hearing a review petition of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) seeking postponement of local bodies elections across the country.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry will be taking up the petition today to finalize the dates.

The apex court issued notices to the Attorney General‚ Secretary Election Commission and Advocate Generals of Punjab‚ Sindh and Balochistan.

Meanwhile, the ECP proposed new dates for local bodies elections in cantonment boards in all four provinces.

In a letter to the Supreme Court, the ECP suggested that January 18, 2014 and January 30 be fixed respectively for Sindh and Punjab local bodies elections.

The ECP proposed that any date in February could be fixed for elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and cantonment boards, whereas December 7, as directed by the apex court, should remain unchanged.
