PoliticsSC issues contempt notice to secretary defense

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday issued contempt of court notice to the secretary defense over failure to conduct local bodies elections in cantonment areas, and sought reply from him within seven days.

During today’s proceedings, the apex court expressed resentment over delay in local bodies elections in cantonment areas as it had set a deadline of September 15 for the conduct of polls across the country.

The Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked that polls in cantonment boards were not held during last 14 years.

The additional defence secretary told court that the Prime Minister has to give approval regarding formation of the board whereas response is awaited from GHW for committee’s finalization.

On this, the chief justice remarked that it should be made clear if the government is reluctant to hold polls. The law will take its own way.
