Elections 2013SC accepts new ECP schedule for LB polls

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday accepted the new schedule for local bodies elections in all four provinces proposed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the petition seeking delay in the local bodies elections across the country today.

During the hearing, the apex court approved the new schedule suggested by the ECP and directed the ECP and provincial governments to decide the dates for the local bodies elections through mutual consultations.

Earlier in a letter to the apex court, the ECP Additional Secretary Sher Afghan had suggested that January 18, 2014 and January 30 be fixed respectively for Sindh and Punjab local bodies elections.

The ECP proposed that any date in February could be fixed for elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, whereas December 7, as directed by the apex court, should remain unchanged.
