IranState Department warns Congress against additional sanctions on Iran amid talks

WASHGINTON: The US state department has warned the lawmakers against imposing additional sanctions on Iran, saying it will be a mistake if it happens amid negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program.

In a statement, State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said that there should be temporary pause in the imposition of additional sanctions on Iran by Congress to give diplomacy a chance.

Iran and the six major world powers including the United States, Britain, Russia, China, France and Germany negotiated to resolve a 10-year standoff over the Iranian nuclear program during talks held in Geneva from Nov 7 to Nov 10.

The two sides could not reach a deal, but stressed that significant progress had been made and expressed optimism about the prospect of achieving a deal. The two sides agreed to continue negotiations on Nov 20 in the same venue.
