Sindh govt to hold LB polls in March: Memon

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: The Sindh government decided on Monday that local bodies elections in the province will be held in March, while the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) again delayed announcement of local bodies elections schedule for Sindh.

The decision regarding holding Sindh local bodies polls in March was taken in a cabinet meeting of the Sindh government in Karachi, provincial Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said. He said that the provincial government will dispatch the letter to the ECP on Tuesday in this regard.

The Sindh cabinet also terminated the ban on government jobs in effect ever since June-July last year.

Earlier, the Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah while talking to media at Sukkur Airport said that local bodies elections in Sindh should be held in March.

The Sindh Chief Minister said that the provincial government wanted to hold LB Polls in March so that no one could level rigging allegations the way they leveled on May 11 general elections.

Meanwhile, the ECP again delayed announcement of local bodies elections schedule for Sindh today for third time, saying the provincial government failed to submit the prerequisites by the deadline.

However, the commission categorically stated that the LB polls in Sindh would be held on January 18 and said that schedule of Sindh LB elections would be announced on December 13.

The ECP said that if the Sindh government wanted delay in elections, it should go to the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
