DAMASCUS: A presidential election will be held in Syria on June 3, the country’s parliamentary speaker Muhammad al-Lahham said on Monday.
“Elections for the president of the Syrian Arab Republic for Syrians resident in the country will be held on June 3 from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm,” the parliamentary speaker said.
The vote is likely to give President Bashar Assad a third term as he battles a three-year-old rebellion and civil war in the country that has killed more than 150,000 people and forced millions from their homes.
The parliamentary speaker said that requests for nomination would be accepted until May 1. He added that voting for Syrians outside the country would take place at Syrian embassies on May 28.
