DAMASCUS: The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has announced a general amnesty for all crimes committed to date, aimed at boosting national unity and improving coexistence in the society.
The amnesty was announced at a time when the Syrian army has been gaining more victories against foreign-backed militants, the country’s Justice Minister Najem al-Ahmad said.
“(It comes) against the backdrop of the victories by the Syrian army,” media outlets quoted the minister as saying.
Bashar al-Assad won a landslide victory with 88.7 percent of the vote in the country’s presidential election held on June 3 and secured a third seven-year term in office.
