Kabul, Afghanistan: 2-star US Major General Harold J. Greene killed in Kabul while a German Brigadier General wounded in an attack at the military training academy in Afghanistan. This is first causality of any US Major General in Afghanistan since ISAF attacked Afghanistan in October 2001.  Victim is identified as Major General Harold J. Greene, the deputy commanding general of Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan in Kabul.

Major General Greene was a native of upstate New York. He received his commission as an Engineer Officer following his graduation from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1980. Brigadier General Greene had  a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in Materials Science as well as masters degrees in engineering from both Rensselaer and Southern California. He also held a Masters of Strategic Studies degree from the U.S. Army War College.

His military education includes the Army War College, the Advanced Program Management Course at the Defense Systems Management College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses. His awards include the Legion of Merit with three oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with a silver cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Superior Unit Award.

ISAF, in a statement confirmed that an incident occurred on Tuesday involving local Afghan and ISAF troops at the Marshal Fahim National Defense University in Kabul City, Afghanistan that is also known as as British military training academy in the capital. According to sources top ranking officials of ISAF forces were gathered at Academy when an Afghan Soldier entered the Academy and started spraying bullets on top ISAF/NATO military leadership.

US official says number of killed in Afghanistan insider attack may rise as shooter said to have used light machine gun.  Shooter was killed by US soldiers on spot. Afghan army soldier opened fire on top NATO leadership attending a ceremony in the academy. A German brigadier general was seriously injured. It was further reported that 15 people, including “about a dozen” Americans were wounded in the attack.

ISAF and US Forces in Afghanistan are tight lipped about the identity of Major General but western media released the name of killed Major General in evening. “Afghan policemen and Afghan soldiers had killed a number of NATO soldiers during the last 5 years and US soldiers believe that “Never trust an Afghan but they have to live with them till they leave Afghanistan in this December”, said a western reporter in Kabul.
