UN Security Council adds TTP Chief Mullah Fazlullah to sanctions list

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Security Council has added outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Chief Mullah Fazlullah on its sanctions list for perpetrating and financing terror acts.

Fazlullah will now be subjected to assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo.

The decision was taken in the 15-member council’s al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee on Tuesday on a proposal by the United States.

Earlier in January 2015, the United States s declared the TTP Chief Mullah Fazlullah as a global terrorist and slapped sanctions against him.

Mullah Fazlullah was elected as the TTP Chief in November 2013, following the death of former TTP leader Hakimullah Mehsud.

Under the leadership of Fazlullah, TTP claimed responsibility for the December 16, 2014 attack on an army-run school in Pakistan’s northwestern Peshawar City that resulted in the deaths of nearly individuals, mostly students.

Prior to becoming the leader of the TTP, Fazlullah claimed he was behind the killing of Pakistani Army Major General Sanaullah Niazi in September 2013, as well as ordering the shooting of schoolgirl and activist Malala Yousafzai in 2012.

Fazullah was responsible for the beheading of 17 Pakistani soldiers after an attack in June 2012 and also ordered the targeted killings of elders who led peace committees against the Taliban.
