WASHINGTON: The United States has welcomed the proposed talks between the Prime Ministers of Pakistan and India, saying that it has always encouraged any high level talks between the two neighbouring countries.
The proposed talks between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh are likely to be held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York in an effort to resume the bilateral dialogue process.
At a media briefing in Washington‚ the State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said that the United States has stated its stance on talks between Pakistan and India publicly on several occasions.
The United States supports Afghan reconciliation process‚ as it is America’s goal to bring peace to that country, Harf said while talking about Afghanistan.
The spokesperson said her country is committed to working with Taliban for talks with the Afghan government‚ as it is the only way for Afghans to move forward to resolve the conflict.
However‚ Harf said Taliban must cease violence‚ break ties with al-Qaeda and accept Afghanistan’s constitution.
