ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has devised a comprehensive hydropower generation expansion plan to increase hydel energy share from the existing 9,406 megawatts to 20,591 megawatts by 2028-29.

Official sources told the state-run news agency Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) that the share of hydel energy would be added in two phases.

Under the first phase, the share of hydel energy would be enhanced from 9406 megawatts to 12,366 megawatts by 2025 and in the next phase it would be jacked up to 20,591 megawatts till 2028-29.

The WAPDA officials said that at present, hydel share in the overall energy mix stood at 31 percent with the annual energy generation of 37 billion units.

Under its generation plan, the WAPDA would add 17 billion units of low-cost hydel electricity raising the number of units from 37 to 54 billion by the year 2025.
