With the theme of addressing the importance of a life-course approach to the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease (CVD) having a focus on women and children‚ “World Heart Day-2013” is being observed on Sunday like other parts of the world in a bid to raise awareness among public about healthy lifestyle to avoid health complications including heart diseases.
In the statement cardiologists said “Today we have an opportunity to prevent the future impact of heart diseases and stroke by raising awareness for adopting healthy living from childhood throughout adulthood.”
To mark the day‚ seminars‚ medical camps‚ walks and other gatherings will be held in which experts will highlight latest research on heart diseases.
Several other activities‚ including public talks‚ stage shows‚ scientific forums and exhibitions will be held to mark the day. It may be noted that World Heart Day was created in 2000 to inform people that heart diseases and stroke are the world’s leading cause of death.
According to a WHO report‚ cardiovascular diseases claim 17.3 million lives every year. It said that four deaths out of five occurred in low and middle-income countries and men and women are equally affected. It said risk factors for heart diseases and strokes included high blood pressure‚ cholesterol and glucose levels‚ smoking‚ obesity and physical inactivity. Insufficient physical activity was the fourth leading risk factor for mortality. Approximately‚ 3.2 million deaths each year were attributable to insufficient physical activity. Health professionals said that blood pressure‚ diabetes‚ smoking‚ lipid and lipoprotein are the major factors of heart diseases in the country.
