KABUL, Afghanistan: Eleven Afghan policemen including senior officers were awarded one-year imprisonment by a court for failing to protect a woman who was burnt to death in Kabul for allegedly burning the Holy Quran.

The 27-year-old woman Farkhunda was brutally beaten to death and her body was set ablaze by a mob in the Afghan capital on March 19, claiming that she had committed a blasphemy by burning a copy of Quran.

But later an investigation revealed that Farkhunda had not damaged any copy of the Quran.

“You are sentenced… for negligence of duty to one year in prison,” the court Judge Safiullah Mojaddidi told 11 policemen while issuing his verdict on Tuesday.

However, the judge said that they have the right to appeal against their imprisonment.

The court also freed eight other policemen after it did not find enough evidence to prove that these policemen were also guilty in the case.
