KABUL: The Afghanistan Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Tuesday disqualified 16 of the 26 candidates seeking to contest the presidential election scheduled on April 5 next year because of improper documents and other violations.
However, none of the leading names were among those who were thrown out.
Those 10 candidates, who easily qualified to run in the April vote, include political heavyweights such as Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s brother and several former warlords.
The disqualified candidates have 20 days to appeal the commission decision, the IEC chief Yousof Nooristani told reporters.
