ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Former International Cricket Council (ICC) President Zaheer Abbas on Thursday said the morale of the green-shirts is all pumped-up after 3-0 victory in the Twenty20s and predicted another whitewash in the forthcoming ODI series against the Carribeans.
Pakistan whitewashed West Indies in the three-match T20 series. Pakistan beat West Indies by eight wickets in the Third T20 while in the first and second T20, Pakistan defeated West Indies by nine wickets and 16 runs, respectively.
Pakistan will play three ODIs and as many as Tests against West Indies. The ODI series will be played from September 30 while the Test series will begin from October 13.
Talking to the state-run news agency, Asian Bradman Zaheer Abbas said green-shirts should not at all have any problem in beating West Indies in the ODI series as the players have already proved their metal in T20s.
“The players put up a fantastic show in the T20 series therefore hopes are very high in the ODI series,” he said.
Zaheer said T20 Skipper Sarfraz Ahmed is doing extremely well in the shorter format of the game therefore the expectations are getting high from him.
Zaheer also praised the Pakistani spinners and said that spinners would play a vital role in the ODI series.
Talking about the national team’s poor performance in the ODI series against England, Zaheer said youngsters need to be given more chances in the ODI series against West Indies.
“You cannot change the whole team or captain at once. We need to give them time and the captain should learn from the previous mistakes,” he said.
Speaking about Shahid Afridi’s farewell match, Zaheer said it is a matter between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the all-rounder.
Responding to a question about Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Anurag Thakur’s statement regarding no question of playing cricket with Pakistan, Zaheer said the day is not far when all countries will tour Pakistan to play a cricket series.
