The Afghan President was received at Islamabad airport by the Advisor on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz. A twenty-one gun salute was presented in his honour.

Earlier, Foreign Office Spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said Afghan President’s visit would help remove misunderstandings and improve relations between the two countries.

Chaudhry said this would be the first highest-level contact between the leaderships of Pakistan and Afghanistan since the assumption of power by the new government in Pakistan.

The spokesman said bilateral relations‚ reconciliation process in Afghanistan and regional situation were the three main items on the agenda to be discussed between the two sides.

The spokesman said a big change was going to take place in Afghanistan with the withdrawal of US-led foreign forces next year and both the countries would have to work together to find solutions to the problems.
