MOSCOW: Russia has provided evidence to the UN Security Council against foreign-backed militants in Syria as they used chemical weapons near Aleppo in March, Chairman of the State Duma Committee for International Affairs Alexei Pushkov said on Wednesday.

“There are suspicions that the militants have used these [chemical] weapons repeatedly,” Pushkov said. “Russia has just passed existing evidence to the UN Security Council,” he added.

Pushkov claimed that Carla Del Ponte, who is a leading United Nations investigator, also acknowledged that the militants used chemical weapons near Aleppo in March this year.

On Tuesday, Iran also claimed to have provided the UN with conclusive evidence of the use of chemical weapons by the militants in Syria.

“Iran is in possession of strong evidence regarding the militant chemical attack in Syria and has handed on the evidence to the United Nations,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said.
