WASHINGTON: The US President Barack Obama has nominated the current vice chief of the Army General John Campbell to take over the US command in Afghanistan later this year.
The United States plans to pull out its combat troops and leaves a force of about 10,000 to train the Afghan military.
If confirmed by the Senate, General John Campbell will take over the Afghanistan post, replacing Marine General Joseph Dunford.
The son of an Air Force Senior Master Sergeant, Campbell grew up on military bases around the world. Â He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1979 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry. His first assignments were as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Anti-tank Platoon Leader with the 3rd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment in Wiesbaden, Germany.
