BANGKOK: The leader of Thailand military junta General Prayuth Chan-ocha has announced that the country’s parliamentary elections will be held in October next year.

In a televised address, Prayuth said that an interim constitution would be introduced next month, allowing an interim legislature and cabinet to start governing the nation in September.

The military leader further said that an appointed reform council and constitutional drafting committee would then be tasked to work on a permanent constitution, expected to go into effect in July next year.

“We want to see an election that will take place under the new constitution… that will be free and fair, so that it can become a solid foundation for a complete Thai democracy,” Prayuth said.
