India calls off foreign secretary level talks with Pakistan

NEW DELHI, India: The Indian government has called off the foreign secretary level talks with Pakistan scheduled to be held in Islamabad on August 25, the Indian media reported on Monday.

It comes after the Pakistani high commissioner to India Abdul Basit met separatist leaders from Kashmir ahead of the proposed foreign secretary level talks between the two countries, invoking sharp reaction from political quarters in India.

The objective of the foreign secretary level talks was to carry forward the dialogue process in keeping with the vision of the two Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif and Narendra Modi who met in New Delhi on May 27.

On July 24, the Pakistani foreign secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said that all outstanding issues including Jammu and Kashmir and resumption of dialogue process would be discussed in the foreign secretary level talks with India.
