NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon declared to observe July 12 as the Malala Day as Swat’s Gul Makai, Malala Yousufzai turns 16 today.

Pakistan’s teen activist for girls’ education, Malala Yousufzai will present the UN secretary-general with a petition asking for help to get all children, especially girls, into school by 2015.

Malala will mark her 16th birthday by addressing youth leaders at the world body’s headquarters in New York—an event organized by the UN Special Envoy for Education, Gordon Brown who will be in attendance on the day.

In her address, the girl education activist will make a passionate plea for easy access to education for 61 million deserving girls.

Before presenting the petition to Ban Ki-moon, Malala will address more than 650 young people from around the world at a UN Youth Assembly.

It should be mentioned here that Malala was shifted to Britain in critical condition after she survived an assassination attempt by Taliban last year. This is her first birthday after the attack.
