WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are likely to hold formal talks in near future, Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes told newsmen in Washington.

Rhodes further said that Pakistan’s support is important for peace and stability in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of the US troops from there.

On Thursday, the foreign office spokesman said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will visit New York from Sept 23 to 29 to lead Pakistan’s delegation to attend the General Assembly Session of the United Nations. However, a much-awaited formal meeting between the Pakistani premier and US President Barack Obama will not take place on the sidelines of the session due to paucity of time, he said.

The spokesman said that both Islamabad and Washington are still in touch for a formal meeting between Sharif and Obama in the coming months.
