Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games: European Olympic committees receive terrorist threats

MOSCOW: As a couple of days left to go to the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, the Olympic Committees of several European countries including Germany, Italy, Hungary and Slovenia said on Wednesday that had received letters containing terrorists threats.

“The committee has received a terrorist threat letter written in Russian. We’ve had it translated and have forwarded it to the police,” a spokesman for Slovenia’s national Olympic Committee said on Wednesday.

The German Olympic Committee also said it had been sent what it called “vague” warnings in mails.

Meanwhile, the Hungarian Olympic Committee said that a letter threatening the country’s athletes with a terrorist attack at Sochi had been analysed and declared non-threatening.

The HOC International Relations Director Zsigmond Nagy confirmed that the threatening letter was sent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Russian organising committee, which assessed it.

“Both the IOC and the Sochi organising committee… officially declared after the analysis of the letter that this threat is not real, and this person has been sending all kinds of messages to many members of the Olympic family,” Nagy said.

The 22nd Winter Olympics are slated for February 7-23 with competition for 98 sets of medals. The Paralympics are to take place on March 7-16.
