KARACHI: The chief of Karachi chapter of Lashkar-i-Jhangvi (LJ) was arrested on Tuesday by the Special Investigation Unit, SSP SIU Farooq Awan said.
The arrested suspected militant was taken into custody from Hub, 25 kilometres from the provincial capital, SSP Farooq Awan said.
Tariq Shafi alias Doctor “is a known terrorist” and was wanted in 14 cases pertaining to sectarian killings, in which eight people were killed, Awan said.
Awan said that Shafi is also a suspect in the murder of college principal, Professor Sibte Jafar, and is listed as absconding in the case.
A former head constable in police telecommunication wing in 2001, Shafi was later dismissed from his duties and arrested on charges of involvement in sectarian attacks. He was released in 2008.
The information on Shafi came through after a former LJ Karachi chief, Hafiz Qasim Rasheed, was arrested in 2012.
