WorldFresh clashes strike Myanmar; 70 houses set ablaze

THANDWE: A new spate of sectarian violence struck the Myanmar’s Rakhine State as hundreds of Buddhist rioters killed a 94-year-old Muslim woman and set more than 70 homes ablaze on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The latest clashes erupted in the coastal town of Thandwe a couple of days ago, after a Buddhist taxi driver told police he had been verbally abused by a Muslim small business owner while trying to park in front of his shop.

Police took the Muslim man into custody, but when he was released soon afterward, people became angry and started throwing stones at his home. Several houses in three villages near Thandwe including Thabyuchaing, Shwe Hlay and Linthi were burned since then.
